We left Beaufort in the dark, because of a long motor to Delagal Marina in Savannah. After a full day of twisty turns on the ICW, we docked Happy Together at Delagal Marina, in the Landings, where we were greeted by our friend Robyn Meglin. We had a great time in Savannah visiting our friends Allen and Robyn. Gary and Allen have been friends since high school. They live in this amazing complex called The Landings, where we ate at one of their restaurants outdoors. Gary and Allen spent time replacing the batteries in Happy Together, while Robyn and Lesley had time to catch up and chat. We really enjoyed our visit with the Meglins.
From Savannah, we decided to leave the ICW and sail on the outside. The winds and sea state looked great, and they did not disappoint. In order to arrive in St. Simons before dark, we needed to have a little help from our motor, to maintain 5-6 knots of speed. It was great seeing our sails again, and finally feeling the warmth of the sun on our faces.
Here is something I want to add
As we arrived in the St. Simons inlet, we were taking down the the sails. A large pelican landed right on our boat. He looked at us, and we looked at him. Then he looked at the boat, trying to take off. But the rig and the speed of the boat was too much for him. He kept looking at us for help getting off the boat. We slowed Happy Together down to idle, he looked at us again, thanking us for the assistance, then took off. We think we saw him with his friends in a flock flying by.
Going into St. Simons, you can see the wreck of the car carrier Golden Ray. The Golden Ray is a 656-foot-long vessel which capsized in September 2019 with around 4200 new vehicles on board. Along the top edge of the overturned boat are lifting lugs that have been welded onto the boat, to pick up the boat in sections. There is also a crane to do the lifting. This is quite the sight.
We anchored in St. Simons, near a catamaran. By morning, the winds had picked up, and the current was changing. Happy Together did not like her situation. She was like a crazy woman, going around in circles, following the wind and the current. Our anchor moved into the channel, when we decided to pick up anchor and move. Something we rarely do. We moved to Brunswick Landing Marina, in Brunswick, Georgia. We stayed for two nights.
Brunswick is a very interesting town. There seems to be a section where it was suggested we not walk and we didn’t see many people on the streets. This is the town where one year ago Ahmaud Aubry was killed while jogging. We walked the streets, saw many thrift shops, and quiet streets. However, one street had activity, with a lovely theater (not being used because of COVID), a few shops and an amazing brewery. Silver Bluff Brewery opened in July 2020, with a great outdoor beer garden. We went to the brewery twice. The first day, we ordered food associated with the brewery. The second day, a taco truck was at the brewery. We enjoyed good food, good beer, good music and a relaxed outdoor environment.
The next day we left Brunswick, and off to Jekyll Island.
