From Beaufort NC, we travelled to Cape Lookout NC. It was a very short motor/sail to a remote enchanted spot. Cape Lookout National Seashore is a 56 mile section of the Outer Banks in North Carolina. There is Shackleford island, which has wild horses, the Cape Lookout Lighthouse. Unfortunately, we did not see any wild horses.
We anchored for the night, so peaceful. The next day, we blew up the inflatable kayaks, with destination to the lighthouse, a little over a mile away. The kayaking was great, getting stuck in shoals, and making our way to the lighthouse. There was a beach path to the lighthouse. The lighthouse, and the keeper’s house was closed, due to COVID. But fun to see.
We had a great Kayak back to Happy Together. That night, we boarded Dejarlo, and had cocktails with our new friends Jane and John Timmons. They live full time on Dejarlo, having sold their home.
Our next stop was Wrightsville Beach, about 70 miles away. This meant a very early start. We weighed anchor at 3:00 AM, in the pitch black dark. Around 5:30 AM, when the sun was just rising, we put up our sails for the first time in a long time of motoring. We sailed wing on wing until 3:30 PM, grateful that Happy Together has a whisker pole. We anchored in this great anchorage in Wrightsville Beach, and went to bed early after a long day at sea.
The next day, we met up with Lisa and Stephan Andree. I had met Lisa on the Island Packet Facebook group. Last year, Lisa and Stephan sailed to the Bahamas on their boat, Slow by Slow. It was so much fun following their adventures. They treated us to a great lunch at their home, and lots of great information about the Bahamas, if we get there. We appreciated the stop at the hardware store to fill up our propane tank, then back to Happy Together for an early start to Myrtle Beach.
