A wild ride on the Delaware River

The Delaware River tore our sail.

We really wanted to rest a day in Cape May, but the winds didn’t want that.  There was a westerly wind coming across the Delaware River, so we needed to go.   We woke up very early, and battled high surf around Cape May.  Then we went up the river.

We were riding the current, and went up to 10.2 knots.    But then the wind picked up.  We were seeing over 23 knots of winds, and even up to 30 knots of wind.   We were going to reef our genoa, our head sail and then we noticed our genoa was torn.  We furled the genoa, and still, under the stay sail and main sail was sailing at 8 knots.

The Delaware River is interesting.   It is very wide with many lighthouses, and even a nuclear plant.   We finally finished the Delaware River and entered the C&D canal.

The canal is beautiful.  We went under many bridges, and settled for the night in Chesapeake City, Md.    After a quart of rum drinks, and a delicious dinner, we are ready to travel to Annapolis tomorrow.   There, a sail maker will meet us, and hopefully fix our genoa sail.

Lots of swells as we left Cape May.

The Delaware River has lots of lighthouses.
